Tooth extraction procedures don't have to be stressful, especially when you know what to expect throughout the process. That's why we're here to guide you through the process step-by-step today.

Step #1 The Initial Consultation

The first step in determining if you need a tooth extraction is an initial evaluation with Dr. May. He'll perform a thorough examination and may take x-rays to determine if tooth extraction is your best option because saving your natural tooth is always our goal. Dr. May only recommends tooth extraction as a last resort.

Step #2 The Extraction Procedure

If your tooth is infected and your situation is an emergency, Dr. May might want to perform your tooth extraction on the same day. If it's not an emergency, we'll schedule a future appointment for your tooth extraction.

When it's time for your procedure, Dr. May will administer dental anesthetic to ensure that you're comfortable and don't feel anything during it. He begins the extraction only when he's sure that your tooth is completely numb.

Most patients report only feeling slight pressure, and then it's done!

Step #3 The Recovery Process

After your tooth extraction, you'll want to keep gauze over the extraction site to help contain the bleeding until it stops. Dr. May might prescribe some pain medication, and you can also manage discomfort with over-the-counter medication.

It's essential to get a lot of rest for the first few days after your surgery, and you'll want to stick to soft foods consumed at room temperature, as heat could irritate your extraction site. Here are some soft foods to consider:

  • Applesauce
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Smoothies
  • Soup at room temperature
  • Oatmeal

It is also essential to avoid drinking through a straw or smoking cigarettes for the first 72 hours after surgery to avoid disturbing the blood clot.
